The East of England covers the six counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire (see map).
This large and diverse region is predominantly rural but includes relatively urbanised areas, particularly in the south and west where it borders onto London.The region has 18 acute trusts, which include three medical schools, and delivers higher training in all 30 medical specialties except audiological medicine, pharmaceutical medicine and paediatric cardiology.
The School of Postgraduate Medicine (https://heeoe.hee.nhs.uk/medicine) closely monitors the quality of training, with a well-established culture of trainee involvement, including an active higher medical specialty trainees’ group, ensuring that the best possible standards are achieved in a friendly and supportive environment.
A particular strength is academic medicine, with the opportunities for research and teaching at the Universities of Cambridge and East Anglia (Norwich) being amongst the finest in the world. With the establishment of a third medical school at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford more exciting opportunities will be available. Taking time out of programme for research and other developmental opportunities is positively encouraged.
All of our programmes provide a good balance of tertiary care and district general hospital placements with opportunities to dually accredit in general medicine where appropriate.
The school provides financial support to our regional training programmes, including simulation activity and to the highly acclaimed Cambridge Medical Seminars.
There is a strong emphasis on the development of leadership and teaching skills. The region’s senior resident programme, which was developed in conjunction with the Judge business school in Cambridge in order to allow higher trainees to play a part in the senior management, has been expanded to include all the trusts in the region. From August 2019, the School plans to offer flexible Quality Improvement portfolio training posts in selected specialities. The School also offers a number of bursaries to trainees taking postgraduate degrees in education. All trusts have been encouraged to appoint quality improvement leads as well as simulation leads to help support these activities at a local level.
New for 2019, the East of England region will be piloting flexible portfolio training posts for new ST3s. This scheme will protect one day a week, or the time equivalent across the year for professional development in quality improvement. This fantastic opportunity will be available to applicants in Endocrine and Diabetes, Geriatric, Renal and Acute Internal Medicine.
These national training numbers, which do not require any extra eligibility or interview criteria, offer the opportunity for trainees to engage in project work, for a minimum of one year that can aid their professional development and meet the necessary general professional capabilities required of the modern physician.

The East of England is a popular place to live and work, and many of our trainees choose to stay and go on and successfully apply for consultant posts in the region.
It comprises some of the sunniest and warmest areas of the UK with beautiful coastline, beaches and stately buildings. It is home to world-famous academic institutions such as Cambridge University and hospitals such as Addenbrooke’s and Royal Papworth. The region is very well served throughout by road, rail and air links to the rest of the country, as well as internationally. There are many leisure opportunities in our cities and towns.
